Symbol – Svefnthorn

Symbol

This symbol is the Svefnthorn. The “Four Harpoons” of legend.

This symbol can be found in various Sagas and its also found in the Huld Manuscript. It’s purpose is defined with this line; “This sign would be carved on oak and laid under the head of the one who is supposed to sleep so that he can not awaken until it is taken away.”

This symbol is worn often as a tattoo in conjunction with dragons, beasts and giants to symbolize the sleeping giant, hidden potential or suppressed abilities/thoughts etc. It usually means “self control” over something.

It is meant to put people into a deep sleep and can be found in the (amazing) Völsunga saga, Hrólfs saga, Göngu-Hrólfs saga, and The Galdrabók: An Icelandic Grimoire.
